HOW TO APPLY

The Staunton Hill Center for Thought, Creativity and Production offers residencies in the spring and fall to writers, scholars and creators  working in a wide range of genres. Our residencies are designed to provide time, space and solitude within the unique setting of an historic, private property featuring structures of architectural distinction. Residencies last up to eight weeks. To apply for Fall 2018 send the required application materials to ssargent@stauntonhillcenter.org

Required Application Materials:

  • application form (see below)
  • resume (limit about 1000-1500 words)
  • work samples (see below)
  • two recommendation letters from people who can comment both on your work and your capacity for living in an artists’ community (please have your references email Sarah Sargent directly at ssargent@stauntonhillcenter.org)
  • $40 application fee

Work samples must support the proposed project and should have been completed within the past 4 years. Applicants may upload up to 5 items.

WRITERS: Based on your genre, submit one of the following: (a) 5-10 poems (b) up to two short stories, essays or articles (c) up to 25 pages of a script (d) up to 25 pages of a book. If possible include a finished work along with your works-in-progress. Work must be submitted in English and in the genre for which you are applying. Your entire writing sample should not exceed 25 pages. PDFs (up to 10MB each)

SH does not currently provide studio space, but invites visual artists to apply who do not require studio space for the work they are doing.

VISUAL ARTISTS: Send three sets of the following: (a) up to six color digital images (standard jpg format, 72 dpi, no larger than 1MB), and (b) a corresponding sheet listing images by title, medium, size, and year of completion. Number each image and identify with your name. If possible, please include thumbnail images of the submitted work on your image list.

FILM/VIDEO: Submit video or images along with a description sheet of no more than one page contextualizing each segment. Images (up to 5MB each), Video (up to 250MB each), PDFs (up to 10MB each)

Application deadline: Ongoing open call

Residency Length: 2-8 weeks; we work with accepted applicants to try and accommodate their schedules

Number of residents at a time: 8-10

Application type: Open application

Collaboration: Must apply and be accepted individually

Geography: Open to US and non-US writers and scholars

Additional eligibility information:

One application per artist per 24-month period.
