Staunton Hill hosts working retreats for writers, scholars and creators as well as workshops. Unlike many workshops that are offered, we provide accommodations as well as instruction. We feel this is an added value for our workshop participants because there is a group bonding that occurs. Residents are responsible for their own meals.
All bedrooms have writing surfaces or desks with proper light, and electric cords for charging computers. Wifi is intermittent, and works better in some areas than in others. We rely on satellite service for wifi but our location has no broadband access. Cell phone service works depending on the carrier. There is one land-line telephone in the SH Office. Since this is a private residence, each bedroom feels like a room in a nice country house and is unique. Bedrooms are located adjacent to the main house on the two colonnaded wings and in cottages.
Other areas for residents to use include the several libraries on the property located on the Old Colonnade and in the Plantation Office. There is a large, shared atelier space for visual artists, an encaustic studio and video screening room.
The newly renovated Hamlett House, which features modern kitchen amenities and sitting and dining rooms, serves as a gathering place for SH residents. Grounds include trails, saltwater pool and tennis court. There is also a game room and TV. Residents are invited to presentations, special events in the main house. Laundry service can be arranged.
Residents are expected to keep their room and communal spaces clean and tidy and respect their fellow residents and neighbors by keeping noise to a minimum. The residency is a non smoking environment.
Retreat: (by invitation only) $495 per week which includes a (daily) simple evening meal. Prices are subject to occupancy, duration and season. Workshops (as distinct from retreats) are billed at a flat rate which includes tuition and accommodation and varies depending on the instruction offered. Please check our Events page for list of workshops and prices.
